Adding Drop Downs and Dot Phrases Within Dot Phrases

Purpose

Explain how users can create if/then logic trees using drop down menus and user defined phrases for dynamic charting.

  • Admin -> Phrases -> Company Phrases -> Select created phrases -> Share with Provider (choose all)

Introduction & Examples

• If/Then logic trees are built in DocNow by a combination of drop menus within a note template, and layering of user defined phrases and more drop downs. 
• The general logic is as follows: 
  • User opens a drop down while writing a note
  • Instead of text options, the drop downs options are dot phrases (user defined phrases) 
  • When the user selects one of the dot phrase choices, the dot phrase can contain a drop down that then has multiple options. These options can include more dot phrases with more drop downs for increased complexity, or can stop at this first level. 

Example: 

1. I am a provider and click the drop down for medications. I chose antidepressant which is a user defined phrase. 

2. The dot phrase for antidepressant in this case contains two drop downs - the first one shows how the logic tree may end here. There are two choices that the user could choose - antidepressant 1 or antidepressant 2, either of which will then be inserted into the note as text.
3. The second drop down here that is part of the antidepressant dot phrase shows how the logic tree could continue - the user could choose SSRI or SNRI which would then give them the option of a further drop down menu. In this case I chose SSRI which gave me another drop down to choose from. 

In this last example the logic tree was as follows: 

• Choice 1 (antidepressant)
• Choice 2 (anticonvulsants)
  • Choice 1 (ssri)
  • Choice 2 (snri) 
    • Choice 1 (Lexapro - side effects include) - this is what will ultimately go into the note
    • Choise 2 (Prozac - side effects include) 

The easiest way to create this functionality is to work backwards with the end choices in mind, and then to build the trees that lead to these choices. 

• Therefore, you should start by creating the end choices you would like to see as a user defined phrase which can be done multiple places but will be easiest to reference inside of a note template. 

Recommended Workflow

1. Open the note template you wish to add a logic tree to. 
2. Click the blue bar to the right to reveal a pane that includes user defined phrases. 

3. Add phrase and then a drop down menu for the options that should be at the end of the logic tree. Using the examples above - I would create my SSRI medications and their descriptions here and label the phrase SSRI. Then I would do the same thing for SNRI. 

4. Add in the preceding dot phrase/drop down combination that would lead to these options. In the above example this would mean adding a drop down in the actual note template that has .ssri and .snri as the options. If this was a longer logic tree then instead of the note template this would need to be another dotphrase.
